Don’t “Squirrel” Your Attention From God

For too many years we have responded to the messages of the world like a dog to a squirrel. Our attention is easily distracted from God and His Word, the Holy Bible. Like the Israelites of old (David and Goliath, I Samuel 17) we hear the taunts of the godless and run in fear rather than believing in God’s protection, power and might. We have timid spirits in regard to speaking God’s truth. We fear the enemy and the possibility of making them angry at us.

In the current political environment, we are bombarded with mixed messages of who is honest or a liar, who has done great things or done little, who stands for the constitution or who does not, who loves life or who does not. We have stood back while laws have been enacted to protect the wicked and lawless, and expand the rights of the illegal in many ways.

Listen to the words of the Lord in Isaiah 59.

“Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God. Your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear. For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt. Your lips have spoken lies, and your tongue mutters wicked things. No one calls for justice; no one pleads his case with integrity…Their cobwebs are not useful for clothing; they cannot cover themselves with what they make…acts of violence are in their hands. Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood…ruin and destruction mark their ways…there is no justice in their paths. They have turned them into crooked roads…We look for light, but all is darkness…For our offenses are many in Your sight, and our sins testify against us…we acknowledge our iniquities: rebellion and treachery…turning our backs on our God…fomenting oppression and revolt…uttering lies our hearts have conceived. So justice is driven back, and righteousness stands at a distance; truth has stumbled in the streets, honesty cannot enter, Truth is nowhere to be found, and whoever shuns evil becomes prey.”

Wake up, church; look around you, Christians. This is the nation we have allowed to grow around us for we do not speak against the evil and wicked things. We have come to tolerate, and even accept, the godless ways of the world. I John 4: 4-6, “…the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.”

We cannot accept the world’s ways and definitions. When we do this, we only protect people from the Spirit’s work in their live’s truth, conviction, and salvation. Read Romans 1:19-23. Stand for truth. Work for God’s redemption in our individual lives and our culture.
