Few situations insist a call out to God as much as actual war. In Ukraine people have been stripped of life’s necessities and any kind of control. What made sense in the world in January is splintered into lies, distrust and chaos in April. Is God evident in the war?
Sharyn Borodina and her husband, Ruslan are leaders of YWAM Ukraine. In December leaders gathered to pray for the year 2022. She reports that a verse came to her mind during the prayer, “The battle belongs to the Lord.” (2 Chronicles 20:15) She did not know the relevance of that verse at the time. She didn’t want to think about war. Now, experiencing the war she feared, Sharyn is seeing God’s miracles. She reports hearing of bombs that refused to explode, tanks with full gasoline tanks running out of gas, storms that kept Russian ships from the shores of the Black Sea, Russian soldiers refusing to fight, specific supplies being provided, and food multiplying miraculously. “I know that God is going before us. I know there will be a victory, but I don’t know what the cost of that victory will be.”[i]
God TV.com relates a story of a Ukrainian soldier facing numerous Russian tanks and mobile units progressing toward the line of defense. He called his dad to pray and ask others to pray. He later reported “There’s some miracle…it looked like an attack from a spaceship. There was some kind of lightning shooting from the sky”. The next day it was reported that the Russian tanks and other mobile units had been rendered inoperable.[ii]
Donations from around the world are miracles to the people in need. Samaritan’s Purse has set up a field hospital in Ukraine. “God calls us to go into crisis areas to help those who are most vulnerable” said Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse. “We want them to know that God loves them and has not forgotten them.”[iii] God can and does multiply resources. Jeremiah 32:27 asks “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?
It is all too prevalent to become wrapped up in mundane activities of life and forget that God is a God of miracles in every breath we take, in every seed that sprouts, in every turn of the earth on its axis. Something shakes us from normalcy, and we remember to call out to God. He is not only intimately at work in Ukraine but is at war for your soul and the souls of people you know.
“I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds”. (Psalm 9:1) Keep praying, keep thanking, keep giving, and know that God is in the Ukrainian war and in yours.
