How many genders are there? It depends on whom you ask. New York City officially recognizes 31,[1] which seems meager when considering the 71 different genders which Facebook provides for building a personal profile.[2] Some sources identify more,[3] and some less.[4]
But if you ask God—the Creator of everything, Who created us all—He made only two (see Genesis 5:2, Genesis 1:27, Mark 10:6, Matthew 19:4). And certainly, the biggest difference between the two genders is human reproduction: women can become pregnant, men can’t. This distinction has been an accepted truth for millennia, but the LGBTQ movement ignores but these biological realities.
Recently, an obese biological female, presenting herself as a transgendered male patient, appeared at an emergency room with severe stomach pain. Since the medical records indicated that the patient was male, the on-duty nurses did not think to check the patient for signs of pregnancy. But after several hours, they finally realized the patient was pregnant and in labor. Since this could never happen with a male, it never crossed their minds that this was the issue.
Sadly, medical intervention was too late to save the baby, who died without being given a chance at life. This tragedy would have almost certainly been prevented had a patient with those symptoms been identified as a woman.[5] When a culture that recognizes any gender denies biological reality, it puts patient wellbeing at risk in numerous ways—in this case, costing the life of an innocent child.
With the explosion of patients demanding a change in biological gender, the medical community is using extensive hormone therapy. Yet very little medical research has been conducted on its long-term effects, and serious medical questions still remain.[6] In fact, recent studies now show that the hormone therapy currently being used on “transitioning” children causes permanent and irreversible lifelong physical damage by preventing the normal development of bone density in these children (dozens of clinics “specialize” in the treatment that causes this damage).[7]
There are other examples demonstrating additional adverse consequences from transgender individuals now demanding services meant for a different biological sex. For example, a biological male in Canada was recently denied waxing services meant for a female. He sued the business owner and shut him down, even though the owner correctly pointed out that it was dangerous to perform that particular service on a biological male.[8]
When someone demands that their “personal truth” negate biological fact, it can endanger not only their own health but that of others. It is destructive to society and to medical professionalism, which relies on having accurate information about its patients and the treatments it offers.
Jesus asked his generation, “Haven't you read that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female?” (Matthew 19:4). Maybe it’s time that we begin asking that question again.
