Proverbs 6:11 offers wisdom for the merchants of the day: “Honest scales and balances belong to the Lord; all the weights in the bag are of his making,” These principles are as important in the modern era as they ever were, and have become even more important in light of the recent election. For obvious reasons, honest scales and balances (vote counting systems) are critical parts of the electoral process.
A firestorm was started after election day when lawsuits were filed by the Trump Campaign to stop the counting of votes in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Georgia based on allegations that poll watchers were not being allowed to observe the ballot-counting process.
The allegations in Michigan were particularly serious. As one YouTube video explains, there were numerous irregularities included in the complaint: forging ballots, illegal voter coaching, dates being changed on ballots, illegal double voting, two rounds of ballots arriving at the last minute in unsecured boxes, as well as poll watchers being denied the ability to review ballots and the qualified voter database. [1]
Although these lawsuits have been dismissed by some as political maneuvers, the underlying principle of preserving election integrity is critical and should not be besmirched!
News reports have even become a part of the problem. Some, such as the Washington Post, falsely reported that a postal worker recanted his story after alleging that late ballots were being improperly marked. [2] In addition to allegations of voter fraud, the 2020 election has also been affected by several changes to state law, such as a Colorado law that directs all state agencies to register to vote everyone who contacts their office, without even confirming citenship. [3]
Though it is often dismissed as paranoia, voter fraud can and does occur. Los Angeles County was successfully sued because they kept over 1.5 million inactive voters on their roles. [4] In races that can be as tight as several thousand votes, election integrity is more critical than ever! To dismiss concerns about fraud is utterly delusional given the kind of power that is being pursued and the darkness of the human heart described in Jeremiah 17:9 where it says that “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure…”
Some have even claimed that, not only are voter fraud concerns misplaced, but the calls to protect election integrity through the use of methods like voter identification are racist attempts at voter suppression. [5] However, this would come as a surprise to 77 percent of non-whites surveyed in a 2016 Gallup Poll that said that they supported voter identification laws. [6]
One of the worst consequences of questionable elections is a decline in the trust that people place in these institutions. As history has borne out with the alleged “corrupt bargain”that Andrew Jackson claimed resulted in the loss of the Presidential election of 1824, “when the winner lacks legitimacy and the loser can say the process was rigged, it is always bad for democracy.” [7]
In Proverbs 29:2 it says: “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.”Everyone has a vested interest in preventing the wicked from stealing power. Christians need to stand their ground, in favor of honest scales and election integrity.
